If you live on the East Coast you should know that a major Horror convention with SEVERAL headliners just wrapped up and shipped out at about 5 p.m. yesterday. Monster Mania is probably one of THE BIGGEST horror cons on The East Coast. If it isn’t it should very well be known as one of if not THE BIGGEST East Coast Horror cons.
If you have never been, picture this… a decently sized hotel say oh Crowne Plaza ( Formerly a Hilton Hotel ), jam packed with people! Im going to go ahead and say the foot traffic can be compared to that of a concerts Foot traffic, in fact, Saturday afternoon they had to stop allowing people in! The Fire Marshall had actually said they reached mass capacity!
Now I had the 3 day weekend pass, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, unfortunately Sunday I go back home so I can’t always go because after I check out of my Hotel, The Extended Stay, I really don’t feel like lugging all my crap around Via Lyft, Uber, or bus ( unfortunately I don’t drive. ) If you have ever been, you know either Friday Or Sunday is YOUR BEST BET to do anything really. My Friday, because I took a first timer, was spent primarily focusing on her. I have known her since High School and she wanted to do something new so I bought her a 3 day pass, we shared a room ( she offered to pay for half but I refused ), and I also bought her shirt from the con! I really wanted to make sure she had a good time, I wasn’t worried about me.
Saturday was a complete shit show. The event was almost entirely shut down! It wasn’t but they did have to stop selling bands at one point because it drew in so many people! A lot were left upset because they weren’t allowed in and the ones who went out to enjoy a cigarette were left waiting to get back in, I was one of those folks. I walked my dear friend outside for her ride and ended up getting stuck outside which many were frustrated with but hey, people should understand, if there are a million people crammed in an area and theres a fire, most people are fucked! I honestly think the con holder, Dave, handled that situation in a very professional manner. As folks left they let folks in. The show honestly could have been completely shut down as in “Pack up go home nothing to see here” luckily it wasn’t!
This weekend left a lot of folks upset, to be honest, I am more upset at the fact these events are only a few days out of the year. If you have ever been you will see you become family with most of these people. You make friends, see other friends, party together, laugh together, meet and hang out with celebrities, so on and so fourth. One of these conventions will create an everlasting memory. One of mine from this con, I hung out with Tony Todd at the bar!
Honestly, don’t expect to run and do EVERYTHING the con has to offer because it WILL be hard to do. Between crowds and events DON’T get upset with staff, they know there are a ton of folks attending wether your in line to meet John Carpenter or Tim Curry, its going to take time. You want your best shot? Just go Sunday. IF the artists will be there, they may also possibly leave early. Sunday is pack up ship out day so the crowds will probably be a lot smaller then Friday and will DEFINITELY be smaller then Saturday. You may miss out on some things but don’t be too depressed about it.
Monster Mania Convention runs twice a year in Cherry Hill and twice in Maryland. Unfortunately for me, the Maryland ones they are out of reach for me. I wish I could attend all of them but travel would cost me and some of these could run you a hefty amount of cash. Me, I spend at least five to seven hundred dollars and up. YES autographs cost money, some charge for selfies some don’t. That’s not including the vendor area which holds so much. From Tee-Shirts to peoples made creations, there is no shortage of things you can find!
The worst thing about these cons, by far, is the post con Depression. I suffer severely, I don’t let people see it but I am VERY passionate about these conventions. I always look forward to them. I meet new people all the time at these things and we legitimately have a blast! These Conventions have a giant piece of my heart and actually bring me true happiness.
If you ever and I mean ever wan’t a good convention to go to, its Monster Mania. You can find them from their website http://www.monstermania.net. I am in no way shape or form affiliated with them. I am just a fan of the convention that has attended on and off since 2005 maybe earlier. I also encourage you to join the Monster Mania fan page via Facebook if you would like to see some of the photos people like myself have taken. You won’t be disappointed!
